Exploring Sandy Ground Estate

Sandy Ground Estate - Jost Van Dyke

Every island in the BVI offers a different vibe and sensibility and offers its own pace of living. There is something for everyone. Jost Van Dyke, with only 300 residents, appeals to those who value tranquillity and natural beauty and there are many beaches and gentle valleys offering villas to rent and purchase.

Perhaps however the most stunning location on this beautiful island is Sandy Ground Estate. Located on the eastern tip is a secluded and private residential community where less than ten homeowners are lucky enough to call home.

In the early 1960s Jack and Laura Eastman from New York began vacationing at Lille Maho on the island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Island. When this idyllic retreat was purchased by Laurance Rockefeller who planned to deed Lille Maho to the National Park, Jack and Laura Eastman decided to explore nearby Jost Van Dyke as an alternative home. In January 1970 on a day sail with friends he landed on a pristine and deserted White Bay beach. Following a swim and a lobster lunch prepared by Foxy Callwood, he wanted never to leave, White Bay and Foxy being an irresistible combination (and this is just as true today).

Determined to have a home on JVD he could not believe his luck when a lawyer friend made him aware of sixteen acres available for purchase on this remote shore of Jost Van Dyke. The parcel was much larger than Jack wanted, or could afford, but after walking the site, he quickly agreed to purchase the site. Sixteen home sites were created above the gentle and pristine sandy beach which until recent years was accessed only via the water. Boat commutes are still how most residents get to and from the estate.

Sandy Ground Estate is still as simple as it was in the 1970’s but it now enjoys high speed internet and easy access! There are mooring balls, docks, a brand-new boat locker under construction, and a private estate road so the island at large is easy to get to. The iconic Foxys Taboo is just a moment boat ride away and the bars and restaurants at White Bay (including Hendo’s and the Soggy Dollar) can be reached in around fifteen minutes. The idyllic Sandy Cay and the infamous Bubbling Pools are also within easy reach. However, once you are at Sandy Ground Estate it is difficult to leave. In a world where everything is rushed and frantic this waterfront community is about enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Reading a book on the deck, BBQing the fish you caught that morning, a picnic on the estate’s beach, snorkelling, watching the passing boats, sunset cocktails and being with friends and family.

Seclusion and calm is what it is about and it does not get better than this. A number of the villas are available for short term rental so the estate is available! If you already know that you want a home that is surrounded by stunning waters and beautiful flora there is one live listing. Hideaway is listed at $950,000.00 and offers exceptional value for money – see the link here for more details:

Editors note: We cannot write about Jost Van Dyke without mentioning Foxys wooden boat regatta that is happening this weekend (May 24th – 25th). The 50th regatta on JVD is going to be happy occasion for sailors and for non sailors alike.

Have fun everyone!
